Schmidt Design Studio Transforms Warehouse into Area’s First ‘Tasting Room’ at Quantum Leap Winery

ORLANDO, Fla. (October 3, 2012) -Schmidt Design Studio recently completed a spacious tasting room within the Quantum Leap Winery, a new unique concept in the warehouse district around the Lake Highland-downtown Orlando area.

The entire winery, 17,000 square feet, occupies an old warehouse space and is the vision of Jill Ramsier and David Forrester. Ramsier and Forrester enlisted the Schmidt Design Studio team to help treat the 1,800-square-foot tasting room, which at the beginning was nothing more than cement floor, walls and high ceilings. These elements brought the biggest design challenge within the project: to find a way to dampen the echo that is inherent in warehouse spaces.

“Exposed concrete floors along with very high ceilings and cement walls presented an acoustical threat,” Schmidt said. “We countered this by using cork-panel flooring and wood elements to help absorb sound in addition to suspended panels and floating boxes hanging from the ceiling to suppress noise from above. This use of natural materials also contributes to Quantum Leap’s core values about the environment.”

bar into an industrial winery that will allow consumers to buy and sample fine wines from around the world in a contemporary, yet rustic setting. Other design features incorporate the use of recycled wine barrels as planters. A favorite feature of Schmidt’s design in the tasting room is a large piece of artwork behind the bar that is made of curved planks from wine barrels. “We brought ‘wine’ references into the space,” Schmidt said. “Incorporating the wine-making process into the facility was imperative, so reusing barrels and converting them into art provided a creative and rewarding method for constructing a textural backdrop within the space.”

Seating is intentionally limited except for special events and catered private parties. The tasting room features a walk-up bar and stand-up tables. “The space has an industrial winery feel with mixes of contemporary finishes and leather furniture,” Schmidt said.

Quantum Leap Winery and Tasting Room will officially open October 4 and is located at 1312 Wilfred Drive, Orlando, FL, 32803.
